Expanded Learning & Extended Care

The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) provides after-school, summer, and intersession learning opportunities for students in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 6th grade.

Expanded learning focuses on developing students’ academic, social-emotional, and physical needs through hands-on, engaging experiences. ELOP complements — but does not replicate — the regular instructional day.

In accordance with California Education Code, ASJUSD provides access to expanded learning opportunities that extend the instructional day to a minimum of nine hours (combined instructional and expanded learning time) on school days, as well as programming during designated intersession days.
 

 ELOP is available to all TK–6 students enrolled in ASJUSD, and grades 6-8 as space is available.
 

Yes. While the program is open to all students, state law requires the District to prioritize enrollment for:

• Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals
• Foster youth
• Students experiencing homelessness
• English Learners (ELs)

If program capacity is limited, these students must be enrolled first.
 

State ELOP funding is calculated based on unduplicated pupil counts (students eligible for free/reduced meals, foster youth, students experiencing homelessness, and English Learners). Because these students generate the funding that supports the program, the District must prioritize enrollment for them if space becomes limited.

ASJUSD receives Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) funds from the State of California. The District must meet attendance, access, and program requirements in order to receive and maintain funding.

 ASJUSD partners with Youth Alliance to provide high-quality expanded learning programming. Through this partnership, students participate in safe, structured, and enriching activities designed to support academic growth, social-emotional development, physical wellness, and student interests.
 

Programming may include:

• Academic support and homework assistance
• Enrichment activities (art, STEM, leadership, clubs)
• Social-emotional learning
• Physical activity and recreation
• Hands-on, project-based learning experiences

Programs are designed to complement the regular school day and provide engaging opportunities beyond core classroom instruction.
